Traditionally, wizards are not only thought of as magic-users irrevocably connected to the supernatural, but also as wise mentors. Many literary wizards represent this archetype: Gandalf of the Lord of the Rings, Ged of the Earthsea Cycle, and Merlin of the Arthur legends. Wizards are thought to be scholarly, having learned their arts through intense study. At first glance, Vivi appears to be a little bit different from the traditional wizards. However, Vivi as a wizard symbolises wisdom just as these traditional figures do, albiet in a slightly different fashion.

Vivi's studies revolve not around increasing his magical abilities, but in self-discovery, and subsequently life lessons. Vivi becomes a competetent magic-user, to be sure, but his wisdom isn't derived from his magical prowess — he's wise from what he learns about life and living. Instead of facing off dangerous magical creatures or locking himself up in a small room with a huge tomb containing secrets of the occult, Vivi travels the world in search of who he is and what role he plays in the grand scheme of things.

Although obviously two very different paths, both the traditional means of acquiring wisdom and Vivi's personal methods add up to the same result. In his unwavering quest for the truth, Vivi conquers his fears and inspires those around him. The most dramatic example of this is how his relationship with Zidane evolves. At first, Vivi relied on Zidane for advice, but later, Zidane comes to see Vivi as a wise counsel and himself as less knowledgable. Whether this is true or not, Vivi comes to be thought of as wise, just like the wizards who came before him.
