Nerd
As a character, Vivi emodies the high school nerd stereotype. Plain and simple.
Vivi has all the trappings of a finely honed nerd. From his slightly over-sized clothes, to his inability to walk without tripping, to his somewhat constant stuttering — he's the Final Fantasy equivalent of a high school geek. He even walks strangely — waddles, more like — and you know that the only people with perfectly fine bipedal capabilities who, in spite of the fact, aren't able to walk properly, are nerds.
Socially, Vivi is somewhat nerdish (no, I don't care if that isn't a real word). Unlike many nerds, Vivi actually has friends — including friends who aren't nerds themselves. However, he's socially awkward and shy, and has tendencies toward introvertism. In a most classic example of nerdiness, Vivi has also been subject to bullying due to his meek, and, well, nerdy nature.
But just like many a nerd in classic high school stories — and, dare I say it, in real life as well — Vivi finishes first. He overcomes his fears, comes to believe in himself and make his own decisions, and turn his life around for the better. He befriends the bully, who isn't really a bully at all, and faces off and wins against the true and ultimate bully. Although he retains some elements of nerdiness — including his unforunate tendancy to trip over himself — Vivi throws away his geeky bearing and...er...becomes normal? Something like that.
