Magic
Magic is an old term that encompasses the idea of influencing by supernatural means. In the Final Fantasy series, magic has taken on a more physical dimension: that of a weapon, either offensive or defensive, built mostly on the traditional elements, such as fire, water and air. This is true in how magic relates to Vivi: he's a black mage who wields a staff — a classic magical instrument — and whom casts magic spells with the aid of his staff. However, magic can also be seen as a metaphor in how it connects to Vivi.
• Irony Vivi is a black magic user, and black magic is an offensive magic with the sole purpose of attacking or otherwise taking advantage of the unfortunate victim it comes in contact with. Black magic is considered an extremely powerful, even fearful, ability: Steiner, for instance, is petrified of Vivi, despite being a powerful soldier in his own right. Vivi possessing this sort of magic is ironic, because he himself as a shy, afraid, unobtrusive character is completely the opposite of what this magic represents.
• Foreshadowing Beyond the irony of the situation, Vivi possessing black magic can be seen as a metaphorical foreshadowing of the person he becomes. As he journeys and discovers and ultimately grows, he becomes just as powerful of a person — in terms of his will and conscience — as his black magic powers.
Magic and Vivi's character a deeply connected. Magic both provides Vivi with strength and depicts his inner strength — or at least, what it will come to be. In a literary sense, Vivi's black magic is a manifestation of his character.
